The objectives of the project encompass the exploitation of large-scale spatio-temporal data from smartphone sensors, the development of intelligent driver behavior maps providing information on safety conditions and eco-driving, and the creation of an extensive tool designed to foster safe driving behavior, with a specific application in Greece.
The project's main findings include the combination of road geometry characteristics, naturalistic driving data, observed driving behavior, and historical road crash records for road safety modeling; the determination that spatial models offer a superior fit to the data compared to non-spatial models; and the development of a transferable methodology that enables predictions in areas lacking data.
The SmartMaps platform, which was developed as part of the project, is now live and accessible at https://www.saferoadsmap.com/.
